Motor Insurance Database (MID)

Frequently Asked Questions

January News In Brief makes reference to the removal of 'days of grace' and the 5 day auto lapse in absence of broker advices? When will this start? and what will be the process to follow to get this actioned?

Some of our commercial motor product range does not have any days of grace facility. For all other motor products the removal of the 14 days will be phased in this year. More specific dates will be advised to you.

The auto lapse is not currently operational. This will only be implemented if we are unable to see an improvement in the timeliness of data passed to the MID following the actions we are imposing above.

Most of the personal lines business is processed by full cycle EDI, how is this affected?

Statistics show that where business is conducted by full cycle EDI, we are very near to the 95% target set. There are improvements that can still be made in encouraging you to process the work on your systems as quickly as possible.

The main issue we have is with 'manual' business whether personal or commercial. These are the areas that we must receive advices ideally within 24 hours or by at least five calander days of the event to allow us the time to debit on our systems.

Why does NUI have a different approach to the MID to other Insurers?

NUI wanted the MID to have as little impact as possible on our Policyholder. Where we already held vehicle information, it seemed a sensible answer to provide this directly to the MID.

The only provison was that the information to us needed to be advised as soon as possible to the event date as the policyholder / broker could provide.

For Policyholders where we did not hold vehicle information, it seemed as easy an answer to ask these clients to update the MID directly as it would to set up our own website to capture this data.

For these clients we have a Helpdesk set up to assist with any problems and initial set up on the database.

They can be contacted on 0161 866 4222.

What benefits are there for brokers in meeting the requirements set out by the MID?

There are a number of advantages for brokers in meeting the above requirements.

  • It is beneficial to combat uninsured driving and increase the pool of insured drivers.
  • Brokers would be seen as socially responsible if they advocate the use of the MID.
  • It promotes good customer service to policyholders. For instance, if a policyholder is stopped by the police, the police could use the MID to check that the vehicle is insured. Therefore it is vital that the database is kept accurate and up to date.
  • MID is also useful for the policyholder when they come to Tax their car. The service to tax a car is now available online for vehicles under 3 years old - and is quick and easy if the policyholders vehicle details are held is on the MID.
