Motor Insurance Database (MID)
Norwich Union and MID
Norwich Union is concerned about the number of uninsured drivers. We believe that many drivers are probably unaware of the impact of driving without insurance, thinking it only impacts them if they are involved in an accident.
As the largest insurer of Motor Fleets and the Motor Trade, we are committed to making the MID a reliable tool for tackling the issue of uninsured driving.
We are working closely with the MIB, Association of British Insurers (ABI), British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA), and Government to create a viable enforcement system that would give the police continuous access to an accurate and up-to-date MID.
The challenge for the industry is to meet the MID requirements now, as these will only become more stringent in the future.
Case study
Here is a recent case study demonstrating why it is so important for insurers and brokers to keep the MID up to date:
On driving home from the office one evening, a Director of a large local Accounting firm was stopped by the policy for a routine check.
The Director was an important client for the broker - in the previous month he had asked the broker to insure his new vehicle.
Unfortunately, when the police checked the Motor Insurance Database at the roadside, to ensure the Director was insured, the insurance details had not been updated.
This caused the client a great deal of inconvenience as he was asked to produce his full insurance documents and licence at the local police station.
