The industrial sector covers businesses that are involved in the manufacturing of components and finished goods or the extraction and processing of raw materials.

To understand the business effectively, Norwich Union have split industrial business into twelve sub-sectors, covering a wide and diverse number of trades.

  • Basic metals:
    covers traditional heavy engineering trades such as forges, foundries and iron & steel works.
  • Chemicals:
    deals with companies who work with materials such as organics, resins, paints, adhesives and detergents, specialist chemicals, synthetic fibres and pharmaceuticals.
  • Electronics:
    covers businesses involved in the manufacture and assembly of electronic components and finished goods.
  • Extractives:
    covers quarrying, extractives processes and all types of mining but excluding oil and gas.
  • Food and drink:
    includes food manufacturing and processing as well as soft drinks manufacturing, distilleries and breweries.
  • Furniture & wood:
    includes all furniture manufacturing and all other wood processing.
  • Machinery and equipment:
    deals with the smaller end of the engineering market such as precision engineers and light metal fabrication.
  • Motor vehicle parts:
    includes all the manufacturing of components for the motor vehicle industry.
  • Oil and gas:
    is defined as the extracting, production and refinement of oils, petroleum and gases.
  • Paper and printing:
    concerns itself with all the processes involved in the printing industry, in addition to paper manufacture, cutting and conversion.
  • Plastics and rubber:
    covers the processing and manufacture of plastics and rubber products.
  • Textiles:
    covers all aspects of the production of textile materials.
