Services

Introduction

The services sector is the most diverse in the UK economy. It has the highest number of new start-up businesses and is the area where new risks are the most likely to emerge.

The sector can be split into three main sub-segments;

Professional Services

This sector extends over a wide range of services undertaken by professionals and covers a variety of businesses which provide advisory, support and financial services. These services are office based and the majority of their work is non-manual.

Media

The media sector comprises businesses that use media companies to convey specific messages to target audiences such as advertising, direct marketing and public relations companies. In addition it includes production companies involved in film production for entertainment or educational purposes. There are also auxiliary and support companies that provide photography, graphic design, typesetting and publishing services.

Other Services

This is also a very wide sector in terms of trades included within it. A common issue with the "other services" sector is that they essentially provide support to other firms. This will include activities such as office cleaning and organising exhibitions. It is normal for these companies to work primarily at other peoples premises and include manual work.
