Policy Wording Developments
Notifiable Infectious Diseases
Context
- At the present time, Business Interruption cover in respect of "Notifiable Diseases" is dependent upon the various Government bodies involved deciding whether a disease is "Notifiable", and cover then automatically attaches to the Business Interruption insurance.
- As insurers Norwich Union must be given the opportunity to assess and underwrite any risk prior to providing cover, and therefore, in future we will specify the diseases we are willing to provide cover for. Norwich Union has to be clear as to what the policy covers, especially with contract certainty becoming an issue for the industry.
- Cover is not standard throughout the U.K. The term "Notifiable Disease" has a different meanings depending on which part of the U.K. any premises are based. For example, Legionellosis and Legionnaires Disease, are NOT "Notfiable Diseases" in England and Wales, but they are in Scotland!
Notifiable Infectious or Contagious Diseases
As the various Government bodies could add any virus or disease to their lists at any time without Norwich Union being able to formulate an underwriting stance, we will be standardising cover for specific diseases only.
Our aim is to make it clear to our Policyholders what cover applies, and Norwich Union will specify which diseases we are providing cover for. These are:
- Acute Encephalitis
- Chickenpox
- Legionellosis
- Leptospirosis
- Meningococcal Infection
- Paratyphoid Fever
- Rubella
- Tetanus
- Viral Hepatitis
- Acute Poliomyelitis
- Cholera
- Legionnaires Disease
- Malaria
- Mumps
- Plague
- Scarlet Fever
- Tuberculosis
- Whooping Cough
- Anthrax
- Diphtheria, Dysentery
- Leprosy
- Measles
- Opthalmia Neonatorum
- Rabies
- Smallpox
- Typhoid Fever
- Yellow Fever
Any "new" diseases that are added to the Government list of "Notifiable Diseases" will be considered by Norwich Union and a decision will be made regarding cover, terms, conditions and premium.
